The residency is located right by the sea in a small apartment building from the sixties, close to the car ferry  operating between the islands. There are two appartments (71m2 each) having each two bedrooms and a live-work space.

AARK is a non profit artist-run association run by a small team of local professionals and artists. Residency is founded by couple: contemporary artist Renja Leino and her husband Bengt Andersson.

The Aboa Vetus & Ars Nova Museum offers an Artist in Residence program in Turku. The museum focuses on the cultural heritage of medieval Finland as well as that of contemporary art.

The artist is provided a working space free of charge. The working space is 35 m² and it is located approx. 3 km from the centre of Turku in a building completed in 2010. The  working space is not suitable for metal sculpting or development of analog photography.

The artist pays for working materials, maintenance and travel expenses. For the duration of the program, it is possible to rent an unfurnished flat in the same building where the studio/working space is located.

The period of residence can vary from 3 to 8 months according to the residence application.
Each year upon invitation one artist in residence is offered an opportunity to exhibit works in the museum’s Takkahuone Gallery (26m²). Duration of the exhibition is 1 to 3 months.

The residency takes place in the facilities of the Kilpisjärvi Biological Station. It provides the residents with a combined living and working environment.
The Finnish Society of Bioart is organizing the ARS BIOARCTICA RESIDENCY PROGRAM together with the Kilpisjärvi Biological Station of the University of Helsinki.

The accommodation costs for the residency are around 13.- EURO per person per nigh.

The residency has an emphasis on the Arctic environment and art and science collaboration. It is is open for artists, scientists and art&science research teams.

The Kilpisjärvi Biological Station in the sub-Arctic Lapland offers the residents the same possibilities and infrastructure as its scientists and staff. This includes access to scientific equipment, laboratory facilities, the library and seminar room as well as the usage of field equipment. A dedicated mentor in Kilpisjärvi will familiarize residents with the local environment and customs.

Tuulensuu Visitors’ Studio

A two-storey timber building (175m²) designed by architect Kimmo Kuismanen. The 75m² studio is 7 metres high. The studio was designed primarily for painters.

The living area consists of a kitchen, living-room, two bedrooms, sauna etc.

The building is located in central Finland, near a small village called Pasala, 29 km north-east of Viitasaari, on the shore of Lake Kolima.  There is no regular public transport.

The Tuulensuu Visitors’ Studio, sculpture park and art collection are maintained by a private foundation.

The Tuulensuu Visitors’ Studio  offers artists the opportunity to work in the peace and beauty of the Finnish countryside.

The studio can be rented during spring, summer and autumn. The prices are 1000 euros per four weeks, 900 euros per three weeks, 600 euros per two weeks and 300 euros per one week.

All artists residing in Finland can apply for the Tuulensuu Visitors’ Studio. Applicants should preferably be familiar with the Finnish countryside.

The residence is located on the Western River Bank of the Porvoo River in the Culture and Congress Center Art Factory. Approximately 20 artists and creatives work in the building.

The residence consists of a work space and living space. The flat (open kitchen, bedroom, bathroom/shower) has a floor area of 56 m², and the work space with a high ceiling has a floor area of 35 m².

The fee for the space is 50 euros per week, or 200 euros per month.

The residency, established in the autumn of 2018, is maintained by the cultural services of the City of Porvoo. The artist-in-residency is supported by the Art Factory Foundation.

Representatives from various fields of art and culture may apply for the residency.

The length of the residency can be agreed based on the artistic plan for the residency. The residency may last 1–6 months. Requests for shorter visits are also taken into consideration.

The objective of the artist-in-residence programme is to strengthen the existing national and international networks and create new connections and communal projects to benefit local artists and cultural operators as well as residents.

Cultural services will select the artists-in-residency based on applications.

The Ladies Association of Kuopio was founded 1860. A handicraft school for poor girls was established in 1884. From then on, the Association has been providing handicraft and design education. Past 23 years the name of the school has been Kuopio Academy Design.  The campuses of the Association and the Academy are located by a beautiful lake and forest area in Eastern Finland.

Residency is located in the top 3rd floor (no elevator). The size of the residency is 79.5 square metres. The Design Residency of Kuopio Academy of Design is intended specifically for the designers. Time period for one residency is 1-4 weeks. See the prices on our website.

The residency artists will have an 80m2 studio in Eskus – with a wooden floor suitable for dancing and physical movement – at their disposal.

Eskus – Performance Center was founded in  2009 by five Finnish performing arts companies specialized in live art and performance art. The founding companies are Oblivia, Reality Research Center, Presentaatio, Other Spaces and Live Art Society. Eskus has its premises in an old, renovated industrial building in Suvilahti, a lively cultural spot in Helsinki.
Eskus – Performance Center is an artistic platform – a working and meeting place for artists and other professionals working in live art and performance, as well as their umbrella organization in Finland.

The residency programme is open for individual artists or groups of professional artists working within performance, live art, or contemporary theatre. The programme offers artists the possibility to work on their projects in the Eskus residency studios. In addition, Eskus provides help in regards to networking and performance possibilities around Finland.

Villa Salin is a large house dating from the early 20th century. It is about a 10-minute metro ride from central Helsinki. There is enough space for 5–6 translators to stay at a time.

FILI – Finnish Literature Exchange supports and promotes the publication of Finnish literature in translation around the world.

FILI organises an annual translators’ residency programme that is open to literary translators living outside Finland who have a book translation in progress.

The Fiskars Village AiR was founded in early 2006 by the Artisans, Designers and Artists of Fiskars Co-operative. The residence offers the artists a fully furnished apartment for 1-3 persons and a separated working space. Kids and spouses are welcome.

Professional overseas (i.e. non Finnish-resident) craftspeople, designers,  artists and other creative professionals may apply for the residency. The Artist Residency is available year-round with residency periods ranging from 1 to 2 months. A monthly maintainance fee of 300 euros/ month  (2018)  is required from all visiting artists. The Fiskars Artist in Residence program does not offer any funding for travel, material or living expenses.

Artists in Residents are selected once a year on the basis of applications. The selection is made by an appointed residency committee. The deadline for applications is usually in September-October.

Artist residence Frosterus is situated in the old rectory built in the 18th century in Kärsämäki, a small rural town in region of North-Ostrobothnia. Also Kattilakoski Culture Cooperative operates in this building.

The resident artist will be provided with a room and shared kitchen. Working space and residence for visual artists are available in Art House Nahkuri in the center of the town and professional music studio Sonic Factory in Välikylä village.

The residency is run by the Kattilakoski Culture Cooperative, a non-profit organization founded by local cultural associations.

The residency is open for international and Finnish artists from following domains: art, literature and architecture, plus music and media (in co-operation with local professional music studio Sonic Factory). The duration of the stay varies between one week and twelve months.

The preference is given to the artists who are willing to  organize a workshop or some other activities for the community. Visual artists have a possibility to exhibit their art work for instance in young artists ARS Kärsämäki exhibition (June-September).

The residence offers work space for artists and creators. The 82 square meter house has two bedrooms. Kitchen, living room, indoor sauna, bathroom and toilet facilities are all shared between the residents. The well-equipped kitchen, work space, piano, indoor sauna, bicycles, Kicksled “potkukelkka” (in the winter time) are at the guests’ disposal free of charge. There is also a private beach, lean-to shelter laavu and barbecue facilities for the residents.

In the vicinity of the beach, the Quiet House offers a place for tranquility surrounded by birds and a lake. Outdoor sauna is available for an additional charge. There is a dishwasher, microwave, washing machine, television and a fast 30 Mbps internet connection in the residency.

Work Space & Barn Gallery

The use of the work space and the barn gallery is split between two residents. It is possible to work either in or outdoors. The old barn building has a 25 square meter heated work space with two work stations. The same building has a 50m2 barn gallery. For an additional fee, the loom can be found at the village house 3 km away.

The residency is run by the Hakoniemi Residence Support Association.

Founded in 2019 in Oravisalo, Rääkkylä, Hakoniemi residence is a peaceful and inspiring working environment, located and inspired by the beautiful lake-side nature of Northern Saimaa archipelago. We would like to offer a residency place for sustainable work plans of different kinds, and an interest to the natural environment. The residence is suitable for artists, musicians, writers, artisans, designers, researchers and architects among others.

Please note that there is no permanent staff living in the Hakoniemi house, so the residency is best suited for guests who are used to working and residing in self-directed environment. The location is remote, situated 15km away from the village center with no public transportation.

The beginning of art

For 16 years, the farm of Hakoniemi in Oravisalo was inhabited by painter Jorma Pajarinen. His studio and a barn gallery were located in the yard of the Hakoniemi farm. Hakoniemi with its surroundings is an ideal destination for artistic work. In addition to the lake-side nature, the proximity of the Russian border and the history of the region are strongly present. The nearby Salpapolku offers a chance to get to know Finnish military history and the diverse nature of the Northern Saimaa archipelago. With the recovery of the endangered Saimaa ringed seal (Pusa hispida saimensis), there is a real possibility to spot one these chubby swimmers sun bathing on the cliffs.

For the founders of Hakoniemi Residence Support Association, it is important to revive the culture, music, design and diverse art of Rääkkylä. Through the residence, the support association and artists are able to work in co-operation with the local community and companies.

We want residency artists to experience the same inspiring environment of the Saimaa archipelago that has been provided to us for decades. The lakes, nature, animals, people and everyday life on the inland islands of the Northern Saimaa are the source of inspiration for artistic and creative work.

In the past years, HIAP has grown to be one of the leading international residency centres in Finland and in the Nordic and Baltic regions.

The studios, which combine living and working space, are located in Cable Factory and on the island of Suomenlinna, both in Helsinki.

HIAP was founded in 1998 by a coalition of arts organizations and in May 1999 first artists arrived in HIAP Cable Factory studios. Completely rebuilt new studios were opened in the summer 2006. Since the beginning of 2009 HIAP is coordinating the international residency activities at the Palmstierna studio complex on the historical fortress island of Suomenlinna, a Unesco World Heritage -site. HIAP has also two gallery spaces, HIAP Gallery Augusta and the adjoining Project Space on Suomenlinna island.

The central focus of HIAP residency programmes is to provide opportunities for local and international artists and curators to conduct research, build networks and engage in an interdisciplinary dialogue with the HIAP community. The duration of the residencies is usually between 1-3 months.

HIAP encourages artists-in-residence to carry out collaborations with local artists and arts organisations and to realise projects accessible to a wide range of audiences. While working on their projects during the residency, the artists have access to HIAP administrative support and to contacts with local arts professionals and organisations. The artists have a chance to give a presentation about their work process in form of an open studio event.

The HICP programme is co-organised by HIAP and Frame Visual Art Finland.

HICP offers one-month curatorial residencies in Helsinki for international curators of contemporary art. The programme provides curators with an opportunity to carry out research and work on international curatorial projects while building contacts with art practitioners and cultural organisations in Finland.

Curatorial residencies cover travels costs to Helsinki and a grant for living expenses (39 euros a day), studio accommodation, residency services and administrative support. HIAP and Frame will both offer practical assistance, networking support and a critical context for the residents’ curatorial research and projects.

The work of each curator in residence will be presented by organising a public event such as a lecture, workshop or film screening.

Hub Feenix Residency is run by Cooperative Hub Feenix.

Center for art and well-being Hub Feenix was established in the premises of the historical Meltola sanatorium in 2020. The huge building (15,000m2) is situated in the middle of pine forests, 10 minutes drive from the small town of Karjaa, 1 hour west from Helsinki.

The purpose of Hub Feenix is to create a space where life, creativity and joy of continuous learning can flourish. Hub Feenix has e.g. artists studios, yoga studios, a concert hall, spaces for groups, an eco beauty and hair salon and a cross-country riding stable.

Although there is a lot going on in the house, the building in the middle of nature is so huge that it´s always possible to find a nice quiet place to concentrate and to enjoy stillness, when you need it.

Hub Feenix’s residency includes a 15m2 bedroom on the 3rd floor and a separate 15m2 studio/working space on the 4th floor in the artist wing of Hub Feenix. It´s also possible to use the workshops of Hub Feenix (printmaking, ceramics, textiles, wood and metal workshops and a sound recording studio) by agreement separately, according to the workshops’ schedules and fees. The residency artists share the kitchen, bathroom and shower facilities. In addition, the building has several shared spaces, lounges and a co-working space.

The old dairy building was renovated by the Kemijärvi Sculpture and Culture Foundation in 2003-2005. The building has four artists apartments and four working studios. Some of the studios were especially renovated for the use of sculptors or ceramists, in some studios there is for instance a floor drain or it is possible to do welding etc. There is also a gallery space in the building.

The traditional Wood Sculpting Symposium held in Kemijärvi is connected to the activities of the artist’s residency. The purpose is also that the visiting artists will participate in developing local art and cultural life.

The length of a working period ranges from 1 week to 3 months.

Art Centre KulttuuriKauppila works to improve the position of visual artists in northern Finland and create international connections in the field of art. KulttuuriKauppila runs an international artist residency, produces the Art Ii Biennale and Valto Pernu Photo Marathon and provides ateliers for local artists. The centre aims to improve artists’ skills, belongs to international art networks and produces an international art-education programme for schools of Ii. KulttuuriKauppila participates in cultural policy on a practical level and believes that creativity is a key to wellbeing on both the individual and collective levels.

The residency is located in an idyllic cultural heritage site by the river Iijoki and is surrounded by an active village community. The fully furnished residency space includes two private rooms with a shared studio space and kitchen, making it comfortable for individual artists as well as artist groups. The location is far enough from traffic for peace and quiet, yet near enough to transportation that cultural events in Oulu can be reached conveniently.

KulttuuriKauppila Art Centre, located in the municipality of Ii in Northern Finland, offers two residency programmes that allow artists explore and develop their artistic practice, collaborate with locals and be inspired by the surrounding environment. Art professionals, such as artists, curators and researchers are welcome to apply to the KulttuuriKauppila residency programmes.

The KulttuuriKauppila Artist-in-Residence (KK AiR) programme offers artists a unique environment to focus on their artistic practice and research. The KulttuuriKauppila Artist-in-Community programme (KK AiC) hosts socially engaged art projects that give artists an opportunity to work with the surrounding community and build co-operation with relevant local actors.

The residency period will be tailored for each artist or artist group according to the artists’ own project plan. We are happy to facilitate interaction with the local community. On the application form, applicants can let us know about their interests, such as having an exhibition or hosting a masterclass.

The duration of the stay can vary between one and six months. The rent of the residence room is 300 € per month per artist and 450 € per month for artist couples. Art and Nature Centre Mustarinda is located at the outskirts of Paljakka Nature Reserve in Kainuu region, surrounded by valuable old forests.

Available for rent are three artist studios and additionally three rooms suitable for researchers/writers. The rooms have large windows, proper lighting, mechanical ventilation and wireless Internet access. Workspaces are available also with basic woodworking tools. Residents have communal use of a kitchen, dining room, living room/library, sauna.

Mustarinda is a non profit association founded in year 2009 by artists and researchers.  Mustarinda Association preserves natural and cultural diversity by bringing together people from art, science and NGOs through discussions, seminars, exhibitions, residency programming and happenings.

Mustarinda-residency offers rooms for artists, writers and researchers of varying fields.

The residency is located in a rural setting, four kilometres from the small Alajärvi Centre, close to a lake and natural surroundings.

The residency program is run by the Nelimarkka Museum, the Regional Art Museum of Southern Ostrobothnia.

Nelimarkka Residency is looking for artists on all fields of visual arts. Circa 10 artists live and work at the residency annually.  The residency building, Villa Nelimarkka, is located 500 meters from the Nelimarkka Museum and 4 km from Alajärvi town center.

A residency includes the use of a studio, shared common areas, and a private bedroom. The museum provides for wifi, kitchen utensils, towels, bedding and linens with an access to a laundry room and a bicycle to go around town.

The artist pays for their own material, living and travel expenses.

Rent is 400 € /month or 200 € plus a donated art work / a workshop for the museum.

The museum usually offers a workshop to the museum’s customers together with the artist-in-residence. The museum provides the material for the workshop.

The application time for the residency is twice a year.

The International Residency for artists and researchers is located in Outokumpu, North Karelia in Eastern Finland. Accommodation and work areas are located in the Old Mine area, one kilometre from the centre of Outokumpu. The Old Mine Residency is operated by the City of Outokumpu.

There are four 12-24 m² rooms and guests have the use of a common kitchen, dining and living area, sanitary facilities and laundry facilities. There is also a studio for artists and a writers’ room in the building. The rooms have basic furnishings.

Working spaces that must be booked separately are Old Mine’s spaces, the Kiisu Theatre, Kiisu Hall, Karbidi and Marita Cultural Center. Their use is negotiated on a case-by-case basis.

The facilities of the residential building are not handicap accessible. The mining area is also not completely handicap accessible.

Residency is open for artists, scientists and art&science research teams. Group residency can be applied for by art/science working groups and organisations with a business ID. We also encourage multidisciplinary projects that combine science and art.

Platform offers the artist a stay in Vaasa for 1 to 2 months. A studio space, accommodation, travel expenses (one return trip, cheapest possible covered), and a working grant (1000 € per month) are provided. They also offer a small production budget.

The studio is located in an old military barrack in central Vaasa. The building hosts also local artists.

Platform is an artist-run initiative founded in the year of 2000. Platform holds a project room and a residency programme in Vasa.  The aim of Platform is to promote, show and be part of producing international contemporary art.

The organization of Platform is a voluntary community.

1 – 2 month residencies for artists living & working anywhere else than in Finland,

Platform does not operate a ‘white box’ style gallery space, although it’s possible to use our studio as such. It means that if the artist wants to produce and present artefacts like paintings or sculpture, it might be necessary to investigate alternative ways to do that. Please check our project archive for examples.

The artist has a contact person who is in charge of necessary arrangements, but note that this is voluntary work so if any additional assistance is needed it has to be agreed upon well in advance.

Platform invites guests from different fields of art.

The majority of Platforms exhibitions and projects are results of the residency programme, where artists are invited to produce a project or an exhibition in Vaasa. The events have periodically been based on different themes that serves as a base for discussions as well as the content for the activities.

An important part of the activities are creating local interaction. The curated or produced projects and exhibitions often have an involving or site-specific aspect. Seminars are arranged to initiate discussion between local activists and invited artists and theoreticians on artistic and environmental issues. Artist2Artist is a series of artist talks of the visiting artists at Platform and other finnish residencies, mainly in the region.

The Pro Artibus Foundation is an independent organisation affiliated with the Foundation for Swedish Culture in Finland. Its main mission is to promote visual arts in all parts of the Swedish-speaking regions of Finland, focusing on contemporary art, temporary and permanent art in public settings, and the foundation’s own, constantly growing art collection.

Ratamo Printmaking and Photography Centre has a long history. The first print workshop was established already in 1978. The centre  is situated almost in the centre of the city. Residency locades in the World Heritage site Old Rauma. The apartment consists of two bedrooms (2 beds in both room), a lobby, a kitchen, a toilet and a shower/toilet in a wooden detached house. The yard consists of 9 lodgings. You can be living alone, with your mate/partner or with other artists (max 4 at a same time, but you share the bedroom only with someone you know/comes with you). Artist will take care of cleaning of the apartment so that it stays in a good condition for the next artist to make herself/himself at home.

Rauma Art Museum and artists’ studios locate close by.

RaumArs is a small independent association, which functions in the Satakunta region in western Finland with help from local art and cultural institutions, organisations and individuals.

The main idea of RaumArs residency is to bring artists and art closer to people by producing community-based art projects. Priority is in community/participatory artists & art.

With our collaborators RaumArs board of management chooses 4–10 artists per year of which 2–4 artists will receive a stipend (free accommodation, some production money and some assistance).

The main selection criteria will be the artists’ motivation to work in collaboration with local people, the proposal and the quality of previous art. Many of the projects are carried out with children or youth, but artists actualize the project according to their wishes and collaborate with any group they wish for. Very often shows, performances or events happen in unconventional spaces. Please read about the old projects from our Archive and create one of your own with a new audience :).

RaumArs has successfully been collaborating with Rauman Seudun Katulähetys (Rauma Street Mission including homeless, workshop trainees and youth work) and Rauman Seudun Työnhakijat (Association for the Unemplyed of Rauma) so we all wish for new art projects in collaboration with artists.

The applicant doesn’t have to have previous teaching experience, but need to prove to be able to carry out the project. RaumArs will give some assistance in producing the accepted proposal for a stipend artist. English will be the working language and should be spoken reasonably well.

Artists pay the travel and living costs themselves. RaumArs does not have a separate studio or working space. In most cases art practices/workshops etc. are done with local people at collaborator’s space. In the apartment there is a lobby to be shared. In some cases studio space can be arranged and the artist needs to negotate it with the third party beforehand. In most cases it has rental.

During the residency artists create communal/public/environmental/site specific artworks or have the possibility to create independent art works and possibly to present their work in the form of an exhibition/performance/education/workshop/event during or at the end of the residency period. Exhibitions can not be guaranteed to every artist, because RaumArs do not have a space of it’s own.

Every artist pay a registration fee and deposit money, which is refundable in the end of the residency.

We have 3 residency rooms. Rent for a room is 250 €/month.

In residency building there are 3 rooms, a common kitchen and bathroom in upstairs. Rooms can be locked. In a room there is a bed, a blanket, a pillow, two tables, some chairs, a wardrobe, a radio and a lamp. Rooms are suitable for working without water.

In upstairs we have television and a small library. Sauna and laundry room are in the basement and free for residents. Artcenter is near a lake and residents can use a boat. There is also a bicycle available. The nearest shop is 4 km from Artcenter and we help with transport.

In the Villa we have a cafe, which is open from Wednesday to Sunday at 12-17. There are also some conserts, exhibitions and other events.

The Art Center Järvilinna rents permanent working studios for local artists and residencies for visiting artists. It is located by the lake Leppävesi in Laukaa in central Finland, 15 km away from Jyväskylä. The main building – Villa – is  surrounded by several other smaller buildings, in which we have a printmaking studio, blacksmith, ceramic studio and casting workshop. There are also one painter and a carpenter. The Art center is surrounded by a large park and forest and offers a peaceful place for artists, who seek for silence and privacy.

We have had residents from Finland, Estonia, Slovenia, Japan, Russia, Poland, Italy, Germany and France.

During or in the end of the residency, the residents have an opportunity to have an “open table show”  at the Villa of Järvilinna. Residents can also rent an exhibition room for 125 €/month.

Residency in Artcenter Järvilinna is run by to Kauko Sorjonen Foundation.

The Saari Residence is located in a tranquil rural setting surrounded by nature, situated on the shore of Mynälahti, 30 km north of Turku. The diverse workspaces and peaceful countryside surroundings provide a productive setting for focusing on one’s work.

The Saari Residence is not intended for networking within the field of art or for hosting exhibitions or performances. No exhibition or performance is required at the end of the residency period.

The workspaces for artists at the residency are situated in the old stone barn, which also houses a dance studio, three different-sized studios intended mainly for visual artists, a sewing machine and a woodworking shop. The spaces for literary work are located with the accommodations. Each artist or collective is allotted a private workspace for the duration of their residency. Some of the manor’s outbuildings can also be used as workspaces during summer.

The residence does not have a darkroom, media room or equipment for printing, pottery, graphics or textile work. Artists may also apply for a residency for the planning stage of their work.

The Saari Residence apartments have a kitchen or kitchenette with basic amenities, and one of the buildings has a shared kitchen. arger apartments are intended for literary artists, researchers and artists with families. Each resident has an apartment to themselves, including an en suite shower and toilet.

Groups stay in more compact accommodations and often share apartments.

One of our apartments has been renovated to be entirely handicap accessible. It includes a kitchen, handicap accessible toilet and three rooms. The spacious apartment is on the first floor and can be accessed with a ramp.

The workspaces in the manor barn are also  accessible (there is a ramp to the dance studio, for example, and the shower room and toilet are also accessible by wheelchair).

The manor house is has a lift to the main floor.

Each workspace and apartment has an internet connection (ethernet, optical fibre). The Saari Residence does not have a Wi-Fi network.

The Saari Residence is an international artist in residence in Mynämäki, Southwest Finland, run by Kone Foundation. Located in a culturally and historically significant countryside setting, the Saari Residence offers an excellent and inspiring working environment supporting artistic development and creativity. Residence participants are encouraged to delve into their artistic work and to develop potential new directions for it side by side with the other residents. Residency programmes

Professional artists and artistic working groups from all fields of art can apply for a residency to carry out a project proposed in advance.

Individual residency can be applied for with a work partner in a joint application. During the two-month individual residencies, residency organises joint meetings, such as a weekly lunch, presentation and feedback sessions focusing on positive feedback on the residents’ work, and discussions on ecology and sustainability. In addition, artists selected for individual residencies can utilize the mentoring programme. Individual residencies cannot be applied for during the summer months.

Group residencies are suitable for working together on projects or brainstorming in working groups. Summer group residencies are shorter (2-4 weeks) and allow working groups to focus on their work or project.

The minimum group size is 3 people, and the maximum group size is 18 people

Every year, the Saari Residence provides work facilities for around 50 individual artists, researchers or working groups. During its history, the residency has hosted around 750 artists and researchers from more than 50 countries.

Last year, 1,064 individual artists and working groups from 86 countries applied for residency. A residency for 2024 was granted to 3.3 per cent of the applicants.

Art Centre Salmela’s artist residences in Mäntyharju provide lodging and ateljier spaces to more than ten artists yearly.

Outside the exhibition season Salmela’s exhibition spaces will be given up for the use of young artists. Through this kind of activity Salmela aims to support promising young artists in the fields of visual arts, music and literature. Serlachius residency is a residency studio maintained by the Serlachius Museums and Mänttä Art Festival.

There are two residency buildings. One is ideal for multifaceted work and social interaction, while the other provides cosy accommodation and privacy.

Residencies are intended for creative professionals working in the field of art, such as artists, art historians, researchers or curators. Residency applications can be submitted by individuals for private work. Teams and groups of artists can also apply for a residency. During a residency individuals can concentrate on their own creative process, but a residency also provides an opportunity to interact with local people, visitors and the staff of Mänttä’s art institutions.

Residency periods vary from 1 to 4 months. In addition to individual residency periods, applications can also be made for production residencies spread over several consecutive years. The purpose of a production residency is to allow longer-term projects.  A production residency provides good opportunities for collective work, in which case local residents can be taken into consideration.

Rent is not charged for residencies.

The application period for 2021 is 1.2.–1.4.2020.

The Silence residency provides a working space suitable for performing arts in the community hall of Kaukonen. The village of Kaukonen is located along the river Ounasjoki.

The working space / the community hall has a surface area of 7.9 m x 9.6 m and a height of 4.46 m. If needed, dance mats, one aerial rigging point, lighting and audio devices suitable for rehearsal use, and yoga/acrobatics mats are provided. The artist-in-residence may also use the green room of the community hall.

Artists-in-residence are also provided with an apartment for 1 to 3 persons in the community house.

The residency is maintained by the artist association Hiljaisuus ry. The association organizes every year the Silence Festival which gathers together contemporary classical music and contemporary circus artists to the village of Kaukonen.

The Silence residency is an international multidisciplinary residency for artists focusing on performing arts. The Silence residency does not exclude any form of art but primarily supports multidisciplinary work, various performing arts projects, contemporary circus projects, and cooperation of artists from the northern regions.

The residence is meant for both Finnish and international artists.

The residence provides a working space for an artist or a team for 2 weeks at a time.

During the residency, an event open to the public will be arranged (for example, a meeting with the artists, a discussion, a demo presentation, a workshop or a school visit). The residence personnel will help the artists arrange the public events, acquire the supplies, and get to know the surroundings. The personnel will also act as a contact between the artists-in-residence and the locals. Artists are encouraged to use the village & its surroundings as a source of inspiration and as performance venues.

The artists-in-residence are selected on the basis of applications.

Finnish Artists’ Studio Foundation – FASF – has maintained an international artist exchange programme and an artist residency in Tapiola Studio Building since  1997.

The Tapiola studio building was built in 1955 for Finnish visual artists. It was designed by professor, architect Aulis Blomstedt. The single-storey row-house type wood building houses four working spaces of 83 m² (with living balcony) and six 100 m² live-in-studios. One of the working spaces / studio is reserved for the residency programme.

The studio building is located in Espoo, 8 kms away from the centre of Helsinki.

The residency focuses on visual arts. The residency activities have been organised mainly through artist exchange between FASF and its international partners. FASF cooperates for instance with Conseil des Arts et des Lettres du Québec from Canada. The Quebecois artists stay at the Tapiola studio for a working period of 4 months. The Finnish artists have an opportunity to work in Quebec retrospectively. The residency includes accommodation and studio space. Artists “home organisation” gives the artist a scholarship for living and travelling costs. Guests artists have access to contacts to local art associations and organisations.

The Finnish Cultural Foundation awards grants for international artists’ residency programmes each year.

Residency grants can be applied for during the August round of applications. Applications should be submitted using the Finnish Cultural Foundation’s Online Application Service.

Titanik A.i.R. programme is run by Arte Artists’ Association in Turku, southwestern coast of Finland.

The working space, 20m2, is adjoined to the contemporary art gallery Titanik. Titanik is wheelchair accessible. Residents are welcome to use Titanik’s audiovisual equipment during their stay (however, availability depends on Titanik’s exhibition programme).

The cosy, fully equipped studioapartment is close to the city centre, within walking distance from Titanik. The apartment is suitable for one person or a couple. Kids and pets are welcome too, yet the apartment is only 25 m2 in size. Unfortunately, the apartment is not wheelchair accessible.

Residence for sound artists, working in the intersection of sound and contemporary art.
Residencies from one to three months. Residency programme is self-directed: we provide accommodation and a work space. The artists must fund all their living expenses including food and transportation. We wish each selected resident will present their practice during one public event, which may be e.g. a short installation at the Titanik A.i.R. studio space, an open studio event, a screening, a talk, or a performance.

SUMMER RESIDENCY 1.6.-31.7.2025

The school building in Kipinä is the old Kemie School, which is used by the Tohmajärvi Kansanopisto (Folk High School) and the Central Karelia music school in the winter. It is located in the center of Tohmajärvi municipality at Kirkkotie 16, 82600 Tohmajärvi. The artists have their own bedroom, work space and shared bathroom and kitchen. There is also a piano in the house. The premises are soundproofed.

Living in the residency is free of charge for the artist. In exchange for the residency time, you can leave some kind of mark on Tohmajärvi: organize a workshop, an artist meeting or presentation, a performance, or donate a work, for example.

TOHMAJÄRVI KAMMARI  ( a year-round residency)

The Tohmajärvi Kammari is part of the Tohmajärvi museum area, the end apartment of the Nyman house. It is located in the center of Tohmajärvi municipality at Kirkkotie 14, 82600 Tohmajärvi. The artist has the entire apartment of the two-story wooden house at his disposal. Downstairs there is a kitchen, living room and toilet and shower. Upstairs is a bedroom (beds for two + mattress). The artist can use the facilities of Opistotalo Kipinä or Cultural Center Ahjo by prior arrangement during free periods.

Living in the residency is subject to a fee: €550/month. Reservation fee €100. Cancellation is possible 2 months before arrival, when the reservation fee will be refunded. You can apply for a working period for the year 2025. State your wishes for two different months, longer working periods are also available. It is also possible to have your family with you in the Kammari Residence.

TUO TUO operates in a former school building 8km from the center of Joutsa. Completed in 1930, the log building accommodates three artists at a time. Each resident receives a fully-furnished private bedroom, dedicated work space, and access to the kitchen, common areas, laundry, grounds, etc. Small groups and collectives (3–6 people) who apply together can also have access to the entire space/ facilities.

The studios are all former classrooms (38m²–62m²) with large windows and Wireless Internet access. The barn, yard sauna, cellar, and indoor exhibition space are also available to artists.

Joutsa is located 2.5 hours north of Helsinki and easily accessible by (direct) bus; TUO TUO provides transportation to/from the Joutsa bus stop.

TUO TUO aims to function as an incubator for expression and new ideas, a place where solitary breeds solidarity. TUO TUO prioritizes projects and proposals in the fields of Ecological art and research, Ecopsychology, Permaculture, and interactive public works.

TUO TUO’s Residency program is not built on the concept of fulfillment, demand, or production. Residents are not committed to realize projects during their stay. Residents are selected based on the correlative balance between their desired conditions and TUO TUO’s means and provisions. 

The residency period is 1 week to 2 months. Artists have the opportunity to organize exhibitions, performances, lectures, workshops, or other events during their stay. Artists with similar environmental and conditional requirements will be hosted together for synergy and ease.

Uniarts Helsinki’s Academy of Fine Arts offers international opportunities for Academy of Fine Arts alumni in the form of residency scholarships in partnership with Saastamoinen Foundation. The residency programme supports visual artist´s post academic studies by providing scholarships in prominent residency centres. The residency partners are Jan van Eyck Academiein Maastricht, International Studio & Curatorial Program in New York(ISCP), Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto (LIFT), Space studiosin London, Cove Park and Scottish Sculpture Workshop in Scotland. In addition, a graduate selected for a residency at Rijksakademie van Beldeende Kunsten in Amsterdam is granted a two year scholarship from the alumni residency programme. Alumni from the Academy of Fine Arts may apply for the scholarships. Villa Karo is located in Grand-Popo, Benin, with a total of nine living and working spaces for professionals in various art fields. The center also has a small museum for collection exhibitions, a larger Musée Karo for changing exhibitions of contemporary art, a library and a multi-purpose space in Lissa Gbassa, where you can organize exhibitions, hold dance lessons, workshops, etc., or otherwise, when the multi-purpose space is free, organize your workplace in a suitable place with a sea view, and our own café, Café Karo.

Villa Karo also organizes concerts, movie nights, seminars, webinars, workshops and English lessons. Residents also have the opportunity to organize events and workshops in addition to their own work plan.

Villa Karo is a Finnish-Benin artist and researcher residence and a cultural center in Benin, West Africa. Its goal is to build a bridge between Finnish and West African artists, researchers and cultural influencers. Our primary task is to offer artists, researchers and other professionals in cultural and social fields a residency opportunity in West Africa.

You can apply to Villa Karo either in the main building, where residency activities have been running for over 20 years, or in the Villa Karo Research Center (VKRC), where residency activities have started in 2021. VKRC is located in the same courtyard and its rooms are air-conditioned and all have their own toilet and shower.

The residency package granted by Villa Karo covers:

-airport transfers Cotonou – Grand-Popo – Cotonou
-accommodation and breakfast at Villa Karo with a weekly rent of €120 or at VKRC with a weekly rent of €200
-room cleaning and laundry
-help in planning the trip and interpretation on the spot at Villa Karo

The resident’s own costs are:
-flight tickets (depending on the season and the airline €900-1500)
-office fee €200 (includes membership for one year)
-weekly rent in the residence of your choice, 120/200 € x number of weeks
-visa €100 and travel insurance
-malarial drugs and vaccinations (yellow fever vaccination mandatory)
-hotel night in Cotonou in connection with flights (around €15-50)
-possible large-scale interpreting services (e.g. for own research)

Villa Sarkia is a residence upheld by the culture association Nuoren Voiman Liitto and the city of Sysmä in southern Finland. Nuoren Voiman Liitto is responsible for selecting the residents and the city of Sysmä maintains the residence itself.

Villa Sarkia was built in the beginning of the 20th century.  There are three rooms for residents in Villa Sarkia, two singles and one double. There is also a common lounge area and a kitchen.

The residence is primarily designed to give young writers and translators the chance to focus on their personal literary undertakings in a private and inspiring setting. Residency periods in Villa Sarkia are between one to three months.

The intention of Villa Sarkia is to provide an environment for young writers and translators to work in privacy and improve their professional skills, and also to increase the diversity of the cultural life of Sysmä.  In accepting residency, each applicant agrees to one (1) performance at a nursery, school, library or other occasion organized by the city of Sysmä during their stay. Should their stay fall on the summer months, residents are also encouraged to organize activities on behalf of Sysmä’s Kirjakyläpäivät, a local literary festival held in July. The residence is a wonderful addition to the versatile range of cultural activities in Sysmä.

Villa Sarkia also offers regular seminars and events at which artists and researchers from various fields can meet and exchange ideas.

Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation’s artist studio offers Finnish visual artists or visual artists living permanently in Finland the opportunity to live and work in Helsinki. The studio is intended for visual artists living outside the metropolitan area.

The artist-in-residence will have access to a tall and bright 76 m2 studio apartment in the center of Etu-Töölö at Temppelikatu 1 A. The studio includes a sleeping loft, a kitchen and a bathroom. The studio is furnished. In the studio, the artist can do all kinds of artistic work that does not disturb the rest of the apartment building residents. Unfortunately, the space is not wheelchair accessible.

The studio is available for a 6-12 months period. The length of the work period can be agreed on within the framework of the artistic plan and shall be justified in the application.

In addition to the studio apartment, the artist will receive an incentive grant (€500/month) to cover living, travel and material costs. Election and payment of the incentive grant require working and living in the residence during the residency period granted. If necessary, the partner or the family of the artist can move into the studio with the artist.

The residency shall be applied for through the online grant service during the application period. The application period starts around 6 months before the start of the residency. The starting day of both the application period as well as the residency depend on the length of the previous residency.

When the applications are evaluated, factors to be taken into account include, among others, the professionalism of the artistic activity, the work plan and the importance of the stay in Helsinki for the applicant’s work. The applications will be processed by the visual arts committee of Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation.

Writers’ House Villa Kivi is a center for authors and writers’ societies in Linnunlaulu area downtown Helsinki on the shore of the Töölönlahti bay. Two of the rooms  are used for longer-term residence and one room is reserved for writers and members of the literary community visiting Helsinki for short-term accommodation. Besides the writers’ residency, Villa Kivi has a ballroom and  studios for local writers.

The residency and the house is operated by Villa Kivi Foundation.

Authors, writers and members of the literary community, who are not residents of Uusimaa province, Finland, are eligible to apply both for the residency and the short-term accommodation. Applications for the longer-term residency rooms require a working plan for a literary project during the residency.
